Spectrum Blog: Grill Safety Tips

July is one of the best months to enjoy summer. We are drawn to outside activities – swimming, biking, kayaking or playing tag – and at the end of the day, we are ready to enjoy something tasty cooked on the grill.

July is also the peak month for grill fires, and according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns.

Here are a few tips to keep you safe this grilling season:

  • Grills should only be used outside.
  • Place your grill away from the house and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.
  • Minimize the chances of a grease fire by keeping your grill clean by removing fat and grease buildup.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep your gas grill lid open when lighting.
  • If using a propane grill, check your hoses regularly for cracks and holes where gas can leak.
  • If you are using a charcoal grill, only use charcoal starter fluid. Do not use other flammable fluid (such as gasoline) to start the coals.
