More of us want to do our part to conserve energy, and there are a few things you can do – around the kitchen (our favorite room) – to save energy.

Dishwashers: Most of the energy used by a dishwasher is to heat up the water. Check the manual that came with your dishwasher for the manufacturer’s recommendation and see if yours is built with an internal heating element. If so, you could set the water heater for your home at a lower temperature (120⁰F) to save energy.

refrigeratorRefrigerators: Consumers waste energy by keeping their refrigerators and freezers set colder than necessary. A temperature of 35-38⁰F is recommended for the refrigerator and 0⁰F for the freezer.  You can check both by using an appliance thermometer.

Ranges: For natural gas ranges, look for one with an automatic, electric ignition system. This saves gas because the pilot light doesn’t burn constantly. For electric ranges, makes sure the surface and/or reflectors are clean because they will reflect the heat better – saving energy.
