The holidays will be upon us soon, and before we welcome guests (or become the traveling guest), here are a few smart home tasks that you can do to help keep your homes and family warm and safe this season.A Smart Home Task Checklist

  • Change smoke detector batteries. Write the date on the battery with a permanent marker – that way you’ll remember when you changed it last. Also, place a piece of tape over the ends of 9V batteries before installation, as they have the potential of sparking and starting a fire.
  • Have your furnace serviced. Your HVAC company will inspect and clean your furnace – and often they can identify small repairs now that will avoid larger costs later. Additionally, check the air filter monthly.
  • Check your fire extinguishers. Fire extinguishers don’t last forever, and if you don’t know how long you’ve had yours, be safe and pick up a new one.
  • Clean your oven before baking and cooking for all the holiday festivities.
  • Clean your garbage disposal. The easiest way to do this is by sprinkling a half cup of baking soda down the disposal and then adding one cup of white vinegar. Allow this to work for a few minutes then rinse with boiling water. Next, fill the drain with a few cups of ice and pour a cup of salt over the ice. Run cold water and turn on the garbage disposal until the ice is gone. This mixture will help loosen the grime and debris from the grinding element.
  • Remove garden hoses and turn off taps to prevent pipes from bursting due to water expansion.
  • Clear leaves and other yard debris away from air vents and gutters.
  • Check weather stripping around your doors and caulking around the windows. Caulk the cracks or gaps around the edges before the cold weather sets in.
